Effect of two different house screening interventions on exposure to malaria vectors and on anaemia in children in The Gambia: a randomised controlled trial
Background: House screening should protect people against malaria. We assessed whether two types of house screeningâfull screening of windows, doors, and closing eaves, or installation of screened ceilingsâcould reduce house entry of malaria vectors and frequency of anaemia in children in an area of seasonal malaria transmission. Methods: During 2006 and 2007, 500 occupied houses in and near Farafenni town in The Gambia, an area with low use of insecticide-treated bednets, were randomly assigned to receive full screening, screened ceilings, or no screening (control). Randomisation was done by computer-generated list, in permuted blocks of five houses in the ratio 2:2:1. Screening was not treated with insecticide. Exposure to mosquitoes indoors was assessed by fortnightly light trap collections during the transmission season. Primary endpoints included the number of female Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes collected per trap per night. Secondary endpoints included frequency of anaemia (haemoglobin concentration <80 g/L) and parasitaemia at the end of the transmission season in children (aged 6 months to 10 years) who were living in the study houses. Analysis was by modified intention to treat (ITT), including all randomised houses for which there were some outcome data and all children from those houses who were sampled for haemoglobin and parasitaemia. This study is registered as an International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial, number ISRCTN51184253. Findings: 462 houses were included in the modified ITT analysis (full screening, n=188; screened ceilings, n=178; control, n=96). The mean number of A gambiae caught in houses without screening was 37·5 per trap per night (95% CI 31·6â43·3), compared with 15·2 (12·9â17·4) in houses with full screening (ratio of means 0·41, 95% CI 0·31â0·54; p<0·0001) and 19·1 (16·1â22·1) in houses with screened ceilings (ratio 0·53, 0·40â0·70; p<0·0001). 755 children completed the study, of whom 731 had complete clinical and covariate data and were used in the analysis of clinical outcomes. 30 (19%) of 158 children from control houses had anaemia, compared with 38 (12%) of 309 from houses with full screening (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0·53, 95% CI 0·29â0·97; p=0·04), and 31 (12%) of 264 from houses with screened ceilings (OR 0·51, 0·27â0·96; p=0·04). Frequency of parasitaemia did not differ between intervention and control groups. Interpretation: House screening substantially reduced the number of mosquitoes inside houses and could contribute to prevention of anaemia in children
Flora of Singapore: Checklist and bibliography
A checklist of all species of bryophytes, lycophytes, ferns, gymnosperms
and angiosperms that are found in the wild (native, naturalised and casual) in Singapore is
presented. We have attempted to account for all names of species and infraspecific taxa that
have ever been recorded for Singapore, along with the pertinent publications that reported each
of these names. For each currently accepted name, the synonyms of relevance for Singapore
are included. The native or non-native status for all taxa is given, along with the most recent
national conservation assessment applied to each native taxon. If we were aware that the most
recent assessment required an update, the taxon is newly assessed here. The checklist includes
2654 native taxa, 479 naturalised/casual taxa and 101 cryptogenic taxa
The Flow Country: The peatlands of Caithness and Sutherland
This NCC publication is one of two which describes the nature conservation interest and importance of the Flow Country, in Caithness and Sutherland, northern Scotland. This area is now recognised as the largest expanse of blanket bog in Europe and the report provided the first global review of the extent of this peatland type. The Flow Country is of outstanding importance, both nationally and internationally. These peatlands are three times larger than any other in either Britain or Ireland. The scale and diversity of the habitat is unique, and the total size and range of bird species present, and other aspects of the fauna, is of international importance. At the time of publication, in the mid-1980s, this area was suffering from widespread afforestation. This 1988 review summarised NCCâs detailed surveys of peatland vegetation in the Flow Country, and is complementary to a 1987 publication Birds, bogs and forestry: the peatlands of Caithness and Sutherland which outlined the ornithological importance of this area, and documented and called for a halt to the destructive afforestation which was then occurring
Structural, item, and test generalizability of the psychopathology checklist - revised to offenders with intellectual disabilities
The Psychopathy ChecklistâRevised (PCL-R) is the most widely used measure of psychopathy in forensic clinical practice, but the generalizability of the measure to offenders with intellectual disabilities (ID) has not been clearly established. This study examined the structural equivalence and scalar equivalence of the PCL-R in a sample of 185 male offenders with ID in forensic mental health settings, as compared with a sample of 1,212 male prisoners without ID. Three models of the PCL-Râs factor structure were evaluated with confirmatory factor analysis. The 3-factor hierarchical model of psychopathy was found to be a good fit to the ID PCL-R data, whereas neither the 4-factor model nor the traditional 2-factor model fitted. There were no cross-group differences in the factor structure, providing evidence of structural equivalence. However, item response theory analyses indicated metric differences in the ratings of psychopathy symptoms between the ID group and the comparison prisoner group. This finding has potential implications for the interpretation of PCL-R scores obtained with people with ID in forensic psychiatric settings
Neutral H density at the termination shock: a consolidation of recent results
We discuss a consolidation of determinations of the density of neutral
interstellar H at the nose of the termination shock carried out with the use of
various data sets, techniques, and modeling approaches. In particular, we focus
on the determination of this density based on observations of H pickup ions on
Ulysses during its aphelion passage through the ecliptic plane. We discuss in
greater detail a novel method of determination of the density from these
measurements and review the results from its application to actual data. The H
density at TS derived from this analysis is equal to 0.087 \pm 0.022 cm-3, and
when all relevant determinations are taken into account, the consolidated
density is obtained at 0.09 \pm 0.022 cm-3. The density of H in CHISM based on
literature values of filtration factor is then calculated at 0.16 \pm 0.04

Heliolatitude and time variations of solar wind structure from in situ measurements and interplanetary scintillation observations
The 3D structure of solar wind and its evolution in time is needed for
heliospheric modeling and interpretation of energetic neutral atoms
observations. We present a model to retrieve the solar wind structure in
heliolatitude and time using all available and complementary data sources. We
determine the heliolatitude structure of solar wind speed on a yearly time grid
over the past 1.5 solar cycles based on remote-sensing observations of
interplanetary scintillations, in situ out-of-ecliptic measurements from
Ulysses, and in situ in-ecliptic measurements from the OMNI-2 database. Since
the in situ information on the solar wind density structure out of ecliptic is
not available apart from the Ulysses data, we derive correlation formulae
between solar wind speed and density and use the information on the solar wind
speed from interplanetary scintillation observations to retrieve the 3D
structure of solar wind density. With the variations of solar wind density and
speed in time and heliolatitude available we calculate variations in solar wind
flux, dynamic pressure and charge exchange rate in the approximation of

Eye-tracking the timeâcourse of novel word learning and lexical competition in adults and children
Lexical competition is a hallmark of proficient, automatic word recognition. Previous research suggests that there is a delay before a new spoken word becomes engaged in this process, with sleep playing an important role. However, data from one method--the visual world paradigm--consistently show competition without a delay. We trained 42 adults and 40 children (aged 7-8) on novel word-object pairings, and employed this paradigm to measure the time-course of lexical competition. Fixations to novel objects upon hearing existing words (e.g., looks to the novel object biscal upon hearing âclick on the biscuitâ) were compared to fixations on untrained objects. Novel word-object pairings learned immediately before testing and those learned the previous day exhibited significant competition effects, with stronger competition for the previous day pairings for children but not adults. Crucially, this competition effect was significantly smaller for novel than existing competitors (e.g., looks to candy upon hearing âclick on the candleâ), suggesting that novel items may not compete for recognition like fully-fledged lexical items, even after 24 hours. Explicit memory (cued recall) was superior for words learned the day before testing, particularly for children; this effect (but not the lexical competition effects) correlated with sleep-spindle density. Together, the results suggest that different aspects of new word learning follow different time courses: visual world competition effects can emerge swiftly, but are qualitatively different from those observed with established words, and are less reliant upon sleep. Furthermore, the findings fit with the view that word learning earlier in development is boosted by sleep to a greater degree
The strategic calculus of terrorism: Substitution and competition in the IsraelâPalestine conflict
Previous work on the dynamics of conflicts where we see terrorism has tended to focus on whether we see shifts in attack mode following government countermeasures. We contend that many factors other than counterinsurgency can influence whether groups resort to terrorism, including competition between groups, as well as their relationship to public opinion and other political events. Hence, understanding terrorist tactics in prolonged conflicts with multiple actors requires us to consider a more general framework of innovation, imitation, competition and dependence between actors. We use disaggregated data on terrorist attacks, counterterrorism and public opinion in the IsraelâPalestine conflict to jointly evaluate predictions derived from several conventional theories of strategic behaviour. We find that the strategic calculus of Palestinian groups is complex and cannot be treated as time invariant. Our results suggest that factors such as the degree of public support, inter-group competition, the anticipation of countermeasures and non-trivial non-violent payoffs have an observable effect on the strategic behaviour of the Palestinian groups, and that structural relationships are often far from constant over time. </jats:p
Solar parameters for modeling interplanetary background
The goal of the Fully Online Datacenter of Ultraviolet Emissions (FONDUE)
Working Team of the International Space Science Institute in Bern, Switzerland,
was to establish a common calibration of various UV and EUV heliospheric
observations, both spectroscopic and photometric. Realization of this goal
required an up-to-date model of spatial distribution of neutral interstellar
hydrogen in the heliosphere, and to that end, a credible model of the radiation
pressure and ionization processes was needed. This chapter describes the solar
factors shaping the distribution of neutral interstellar H in the heliosphere.
Presented are the solar Lyman-alpha flux and the solar Lyman-alpha resonant
radiation pressure force acting on neutral H atoms in the heliosphere, solar
EUV radiation and the photoionization of heliospheric hydrogen, and their
evolution in time and the still hypothetical variation with heliolatitude.
Further, solar wind and its evolution with solar activity is presented in the
context of the charge exchange ionization of heliospheric hydrogen, and in the
context of dynamic pressure variations. Also the electron ionization and its
variation with time, heliolatitude, and solar distance is presented. After a
review of all of those topics, we present an interim model of solar wind and
the other solar factors based on up-to-date in situ and remote sensing
observations of solar wind. Results of this effort will further be utilised to
improve on the model of solar wind evolution, which will be an invaluable asset
in all heliospheric measurements, including, among others, the observations of
